The Spider

Friday 26th of December, 2025

A shaky hand soon found its rhythm. I hadn’t drawn for a very long time, but what started as a way to tizz up a gift bag full of whoopie cushions has soon become something of a magical sigil. I’ve drawn this spider over and over again for the last 24 hours. Today at Boxing Day lunch, my sister Jessi handed me a temporary tattoo pen and my 3 year old nephew Westy asked me for a Spider tattoo, like the one I had drawn on his gift bag.

Later in the day we were drawing on the pavement with some coloured chalk (another present from Auntie Jessi), and along came the Spider again. The rhythm of my hand became hypnotic on a larger scale. Later in the night I drew the same Spider tattoo design on Mum’s arm too. She said it was so relaxing she almost fell asleep. Spider legs always look best drawn very quickly, almost as if you're signing your name.

The fluffy Victorian Huntsman. Cute.

I’ve always loved Spiders, my Mum says Spiders don’t bite me, and if I had to pick a favourite I reckon I like the native Australian Huntsman the best. I’ve only ever had one rear up at me, and I’ve since learned they only do that when they’re protecting their egg sac that they weave onto their bellies. If they need food they hunt it, mostly cockroaches, crickets and sometimes other spiders too, or mice if they're small enough.

They don't use their web to trap anything, rather they spin pockets of silk to protect their hatchlings, or abseil on single threads to steady their descent. There’s a subspecies called the Communal Huntsman, who travel in groups, hang out together and even share prey. This is very strange behaviour for a Huntsman indeed, unlike the gentle giant pictured above, who prefers the single Hermit life.

CAPRICORN SEASON

Monday 22nd of December, 2025 - Monday 19th of January, 2026

WHEEL of FORTUNE X

The day before on December 25th, after we watched my nephew Bruce try out cracking his new whip and while we were sitting around the kitchen table customizing our tote bags with some new Posca paint pens, my niece Evie asked if I could get hers started with an outline, like the butterfly I had drawn for her sister Dottie. I asked what she’d like me to draw, maybe a passionflower like the one I had drawn on her whoopie cushion gift bag? Very quietly, she asked,

“Can you draw a Spider? I love Spiders.”

Whether or not she had seen the drawing on Westy’s gift bag didn’t matter, and I quickly set about sketching out the Spider for a second time as practice on a sheet of scrap paper, then for real on her pink cotton tote.

Mostly filled with Whoopie cushions

Dottie looked up from her butterfly and hurriedly asked if I could draw a Spider on the other side of her purple tote.

“I love Spiders too.”

These awesome little kids were sharing new sides of their personalities with me, and so I thought it best to ask them for their updated favourite colours. “I like all of the dark colours. I really like dark things, like the Headless Horseman.” Evie said from under her eyebrows. “I like dark colours too. And I like the Headless Horseman.” Dottie cheerily interrupted. “You don’t know what the Headless Horseman is.” quipped Evie.

I took note of the new favourite colours, and shimmering glimmers of a slightly Gothic sensibility. Dottie excused herself to the powder room, in order to apply more eyeshadow.

As the Spider Omen soon told, the threads of Capricorn Season were already spinning from all corners of the 11th House on my birth chart; a place where my Humanitarian Spirit educates itself and where I build spaces of community, as guided by my Capricorn Sun.

I’ve spent the entirety of Capricorn Season in close company with friends and family, folks I have known and loved the longest. So many new possibilities for connection opened up, and while my to-do list grew by the day, I was beaming with pride that this time my responsibilities to the community are happening in real life, and across my many scattered neighborhoods. I am grateful every day that I am collaborating with some of my oldest and dearest friends once more.

I primped, polished and quaffed the merchandise at my Sister’s lovely salon, and we cast a spell to call in a new baby Moth for she and her partner Phil to love. I’ve held my friends with my arms and my voice as they face deep grief. I’ve encouraged their brave vulnerability while being guided by my past experiences. I’ve imagined complete artworks and spent quality time with my Psychic friends Shan and Yvon, and also found the courage to stick with the intention and make steps towards active creation.

Back in the Neighbourhood

Me and my friend Mel K, the babe who told me about the Omens in the first place, have started work together at MIECAT, a centre for the study of Art Therapy. I’m assisting her in creating spaces to aid Community Engagement, and I’ve been  able to remember all the skills I’ve earned over the years, in all of my different incarnations as Space Creator and Love Activist.

I helped my brother move house, and set himself up again in a lovely little beach shack, nestled safely by the bay in his beloved home town. My Mum and I have kept our heads down, our bums up and used our hands as tools to experiment with new mediums, and perform some magical tests.

Birthday Babe

And, I also turned 42 on the 16th of January. It’s has gone down as one of the best birthday weekends ever, and was capped off by a date with Mel K and her wonderful 9 year old, the lovely Vi. We went along to see my sweet Sissy Fox dance at Club Broadway, a musical theatre centric day club event for all ages.

As Fox commanded the stage with a bevvy of beautiful Drag Queens, and I swished my hair around doing my best Ariana impersonation, little Vi’s face, and gratitude, simply BEAMED with happiness. It was Vi’s first time seeing real Drag Queens, in real life, at a real disco, and she was simply floating on air. So was I. Vi and her Mum Mel K were the perfect company to end a most wonderful Capricorn Season that has been filled to the brim with love and connection.

Glinda and Elphaba

My eyes and my heart are wide open, and I feel so ready to weave some magic, and to protect my loved ones if ever they should need it. Not everything we try together will be a success, but in the process of experimentation I am already finding the gold, and the silver, and the copper, and the silk. Spidey Senses ACTIVATE.

Spidey sighting on the way to work with Mel K on my birthday

The Wheel of Fortune spins its final threads as the Sun sets on the last day of Capricorn Season.

But is this the last we shall see of the Spider? And what of the 2nd Omen that I found on December 27th? On the day that I jumped a northbound train to babysit my friend Jake the Cat, while his Daddy Fox prepared to travel to the Airport with bravery and vulnerability. What message will this Omen bring for Aquarius Season, and do you remember the clue from the Tarot Spread at the beginning of this story? (Hint. check The Omen Days page again.)

Tune in on February 19th and as the Sun enters Pisces, I shall tell you about all that I was ready to learn from the messages of the Omens, and by the light of Aquarius Season 2026.

Oceans of love
